Message from our President
Dear Friends,
I am writing to you this year with a sense of urgency. I am requesting that you please consider assisting us at the Menora Foundation as we continue to support and extend the hand of kindness to so many in our community who are experiencing hardship.
Higher inflation and significant interest rate rises, combined with a rental property market in crisis have seen many families who were previously teetering on the edge, fall into a place of great need through no fault of
their own.
Many in our Perth Jewish community, including families with very young children, have found themselves homeless or extremely close to that very troubling reality.
As you may know, we have a very small team of core staff who, on a daily basis, are faced with the mammoth task of assisting families experiencing extreme and unprecedented hardship. Our staff go to great lengths
to urgently find the means to provide food, shelter or critical medical attention for families in crisis, whilst simultaneously working to establish the support that they need to ultimately become self-sufficient.
Importantly, this meaningful and practical path to self-sufficiency is our end goal at Menora.
We are very proud to share with you that in recent months, five families who originally came to us in a state of crisis have now achieved self-sufficiency.
In the last three years, the urgent demand for help from inside our community has more than doubled. In the last 6 months we have seen an increase greater than any previous period.
Our team deals constantly with families in our community who have been forced to leave their rental properties as landlords either renovate or put their homes on the market. These individuals and families have to compete
with hundreds of other prospective tenants to secure new rental accommodation, but unfortunately find their endeavours are almost always unsuccessful in the current market. Those lucky enough to secure a rental are regularly faced with unmanageable rental increases.
As you can imagine, this is a source of immense anxiety for them and often leads to significant mental health challenges, which further impacts other family members.
This in turn has added pressure on our Board and very small social health team as we work to support both adults and children with the immeasurable difficulties of mental health concerns.
We are grateful to our many wonderful volunteers who help us to generate income to support our work through our Woodrow Lane Pop Up Shop, but that income does not produce enough to meet the increase in demand for our services.
Therefore, I am writing to ask for your financial support to ensure that we can continue to provide the invaluable services that our community members so desperately need.
Nobody in our community should go hungry. No family in our community should be sleeping in their car, or worrying about putting a roof over their children’s heads, or not being able to pay for vital health care for themselves, their children or other family members.
It is with gratitude that we acknowledge your past support and the important part your contribution has played in our critical and essential work. We ask you to give generously to our annual appeal.
Please note that all donations over $2 are tax deductible.
If have any questions about this letter or our services, we would be glad to hear from you. Please call our office at 9375 5059 or email office@menora.org.au.
Warmest regards,
Melanie Greenfeld
